Ahu o Laka is a 3-mile-long sand formation in the middle of Kaneohe Bay. Water depths here range from exposed dry sand to 4 feet deep depending on the tide.
Protected by a massive barrier reef, the water at the sandbar is incredibly calm and wave-free. The dry sand area covers roughly 3 acres during low tide.
This central area is a sacred Hawaiian site dedicated to Laka, the goddess of hula. Visitors use the space for walking, swimming, and relaxing.

These white sand patches emerge entirely from the water during low or minus tides. It is a great area for walking, photography, and relaxing. Check the daily tide charts and plan to arrive an hour before dead low tide for the most exposed sand.

At mid-to-high tide, knee-to-waist deep water covers the sand flats. The barrier reef protects this area, creating a massive natural swimming pool without ocean waves. Wear polarized sunglasses to cut the surface glare and see the clear water.

Boat charters anchor at the edge of the shallow sand in designated safety zones. Tour operators set up floating platforms and water volleyball nets here. Book a guided catamaran tour if you want access to these water sports and giant floats.
