The Kaneohe Sandbar sits roughly 1 mile offshore. You will spend 3 to 4 hours completely exposed to the sun and water. Since there are no stores, bathrooms, or trash cans, you must bring everything you need and pack all your trash out.

What sun protection do I need?

You need reef-safe sunscreen, a UV rash guard, and a wide-brimmed hat.

Hawaii law strictly requires reef-safe sunscreen. A UV rash guard provides excellent coverage while swimming in the shallow lagoon. Polarized sunglasses will cut the glare off the water, helping you spot sea turtles and the exact depth of the sandbar.

Do I need water shoes for the sandbar?

Yes, water shoes or reef booties are highly recommended.

The sandbar features fine white sand, but the surrounding edges drop off into patch reefs. If you plan to wade near the edges, reef booties protect your feet from sharp coral. Remember that standing on live coral is illegal.

What food and drinks should I pack?

Pack plenty of drinking water and snacks in a cooler.

Staying hydrated is critical in the direct sun. Bring enough water for your entire 3 to 4-hour trip. You can pack sandwiches and snacks. Note that alcohol is strictly banned during three-day holiday weekends like Memorial Day, July 4th, and Labor Day.

How do I keep my electronics dry?

Use a dry bag for your phone, keys, and towels.

The water depth fluctuates from dry sand at minus tide to 3 or 4 feet deep at high tide. If you kayak, your gear will get wet. A dry bag secures your items. Bring a waterproof camera or a GoPro to take photos in the water.

Should I bring snorkeling gear?

Bring a mask and snorkel if your tour or rental does not provide them.

Check your specific booking before you pack. Guided catamaran tours usually include masks and mouthpieces. Kayak rentals often include them as well. If you charter a private boat, you will likely need to bring your own gear to view the patch reefs.

Questions travellers ask

Are there trash cans on the sandbar?

No. There are zero facilities out on the water. You must pack out all of your trash when you return to He'eia Kea Small Boat Harbor.

Can I bring alcohol?

Yes, on normal days. However, the State of Hawaii strictly bans alcohol and drugs on the sandbar during three-day holiday weekends like Memorial Day and July 4th.

Do I need to pack a life jacket?

Commercial boat tours and kayak rentals provide life jackets. If you rent a private boat, verify with the captain before departing to ensure they have enough vests.
