Visiting the sandbar requires some preparation since there are no facilities on the water. However, the shallow environment acts like a natural swimming pool. This makes it a very safe spot for young children to wade and play.

Is the Kaneohe Sandbar family-friendly?

Yes, the sandbar is a very safe and fun environment for young children.

Kaneohe Bay is protected by the only true barrier reef in the Hawaiian archipelago. This reef blocks open ocean swells. The water at the sandbar remains extremely calm and wave-free. Kids can play safely without facing strong shore breaks.

How deep is the water for kids?

Water depths range from exposed dry sand to 3 or 4 feet deep at high tide.

The depth fluctuates dramatically based on daily tide charts. At minus tide, about 3 acres of dry white sand emerge completely. At mid-to-high tide, the area becomes a knee-to-waist deep wading pool. Check tide charts to time your visit.

Should families book a boat tour or a kayak?

Families should book a guided boat tour rather than renting kayaks.

A boat ride to the sandbar takes just 15 to 20 minutes. Guided tours provide life jackets, snorkeling gear, and easy access. Kayaking requires a physically demanding 1-to-2-mile paddle against wind and currents. It is not recommended for young children.

Are there bathrooms or facilities at the sandbar?

No, there are no facilities or trash cans on the sandbar itself.

You must pack out all your trash. If you book a commercial catamaran tour, the boat will have a marine restroom on board. If you rent a private pontoon, you will not have bathroom access on the water.

What should kids wear and bring?

Pack plenty of sun protection, drinking water, and snacks.

  • Reef-safe sunscreen: This is required by Hawaii state law.
  • Clothing: A swimsuit, UV rash guard, and a wide-brimmed sun hat.
  • Footwear: Water shoes or reef booties to protect small feet.
  • Supplies: Plenty of drinking water, snacks, and a towel.

When is the best time to visit with children?

The summer months from May to September offer the most reliable calm weather.

The sandbar is accessible year-round, but summer provides clear skies. Keep in mind that commercial tours cannot operate on Sundays or federal holidays. If you plan a weekend trip, you must book a Saturday tour.
